The Cattlemen's Association of Virginia City brings in range detective/hired gun Sherman Clegg  (Earl Holliman) to stop the cattle rustling that they think is being done by the small outfit cattle owners in the area, against the protests of Adam Cartwright (Pernell Roberts). Ira Tatum (Don Collier) is the leader of the small owners, who appeal to Adam to help protect them.

Bob Hoy, who played Don's brother Joe Butler in The High Chaparral appears in the beginning of the episode.

 

Range detective Sherman Clegg (Earl Holliman) keeps an eye on  ranch owner Iran Tatum (Don Collier)

 

Tatum and his wife (Ina Victor) hold a rifle on Clegg when he trespasses on his ranch.
